Dinners at Marla Bakery, Presented by Yugen

Here is an interesting popup in San Francisco, at the Marla Bakery.

Nato Inclinato: A Chinese Italian Dinner

"going to italian restaurants i have always wished i had brought with me a pair of chopsticks to eat the pasta dishes the way i would noodles. this memory of wanting was the birth of “nato inclinato”, which translates to born slanted.

the arrangements meld chinese and italian flavors, textures, and aesthetics by using their ingredients interchangeably. conceptually, they feel and taste as if they are cut from the same cloth. Hence, nato inclinato, the imagination of what dishes would come out of a complete amalgamation of the two cultures."

Pop-up Playbook from Eventbrite

Our good friends at Culintro have brought to our attention that our great friends at Eventbrite (which we use for all of our direct event ticket sales), have created a nice how-to for restaurants and bars considering holding their own pop-up event.

The compilation is called the Pop-up Playbook, and collects the advice of several experts for you to use. (BTW, they did not call on us, which is of course an oversight).

It also includes Toolkit to help you organize your popup event, such as this Popup Report on 'experiential dining.'

Ceviche Project Pop Up Dinner Series in Los Angeles

Travelers visiting Los Angeles this summer and fall are in for a culinary experience.

The Ceviche Project and DeLeón Tequila are coming to Skybar at Mondrian for a 5-part dinner series featuring 5-course seafood pop-up dinner and handcrafted cocktail pairings, taking place from Thursday, June 25th throughout July 23, August 20, September 24 and October 22. Tickets for these affairs are available at http://cevicheproject.nightout.com.

The Ceviche Project is a pop-up culinary and cultural experience that brings together people, music, and Michelin star restaurant–caliber ingredients in a communal and one-of-a-kind dining experience that features innovative takes and artful, never-repeated seafood dishes. The Ceviche Project, DeLeón Tequila, and Skybar at Mondrian are teaming up to showcase Founder Octavio Olivas' varied experiments with ceviche and its many variations, as well as tiraditos, oysters on the half-shell, and crudo preparations: featuring fresh and premium offerings from fish and farmers markets alike.

While guests can expect culinary delights to be the centerpiece of their experience, Ceviche Project is a true celebration of all things summer in Los Angeles: one that brings together a unique mix of in-the-know locals and chic vacationers looking for something new and exciting to share during dinnertime.

Each dinner will kick off with DeLeón Tequila tasting followed by dinner featuring five new dishes paired with handcrafted cocktails from DeLeón, so each dinner is unique. Guests will eat, drink, converse, laugh, dance, learn, and engage, and Olivas will share stories about the origin and inspiration of each dish and paired cocktails. http://www.cevicheproject.com

Gas Station Restaurants and Popups

The Washington Post recently published an article by Astrid Riecken about the rise in quality dining establishments popping up at gas stations on the East Coast. The reasons are that the flow of people is constant, they are usually hungry, and the venue is pretty cheap to lease.

One blogger has taken this as a new hobby:

Al Hebert, a medical journalist who blogs at GasStationGourmet.com about his eating adventures, once ate Cornish hen prepared by a classically trained chef in a Chevron station. “The average person just fills up their tank, pays with a credit card and drives off,” Hebert said. “But if you just walk a few feet from the pump to the store, you might discover one of the best eating experiences of your life.”

Here's a video about a food truck that not only is a popup at one gas station, but is planning on being a permanent fixture there and at gas stations across the region.

About Corinne Rice

Corinne Rice graduated from Matthew Kenney Academy, deemed one of the best raw culinary schools in the world. She started Chartreuse- a traveling, raw-vegan restaurant in February of 2012. With Chartreuse, she popped up all over the city of Detroit at art galleries, historical buildings, and urban farms. The dinners featured local artists and live music, and the menus (all four course, organic, mostly heirloom, and soy and gluten free) were all different and completely based around what produce was available from urban farms within Detroit's city limits. In Detroit, Corinne is a local celebrity. She has prepared six-course meals for up to 75 people at a time and was the executive chef for David "Avocado" Wolf's birthday dinner in 2011. During the spring of 2013, Rice relocated to Venice, CA, where she started ZOETIC, a spin-off of Chartreuse.

In the kitchen, Corinne prepares organic, plant-based fare with a focus on sourcing locally and creating seasonal dishes. She uses only the finest quality ingredients that are gluten- and soy-free, and whenever possible she uses heirloom varieties. She believes in taking care of our bodies now, by nourishing them with the foods and herbs they need, so that each and every body will be able to live a long, healthy life- one that is filled with joy and happiness.

Pop-up restaurants make a debut at some local establishments. These one-night-stand restaurants take the cuisine in a decidedly different direction than what you usually would find at the address. The plating is less fussy, the cooking more like your grandma's.

Our very own event organizer Olive also happens to be a very talented chef, as some members have tasted her wonderful dishes during many potluck meals. Her style of cuisine is modern International with an Asian twist. Recently, she decided to further develop her culinary passion from "CookingDolls":  a private chef service and invitation only Dining Club.  And now we're pleased to announce that she is hosting her first ever pop-up dinner event!
